The Role of the International Adviser

My role is to support you in all things International - from planning your trip abroad to holding an International evening in your unit.

I can help with the processing of forms, support for group leaders and participants. I also have information and resources for international evenings.

Taking the girls abroad is a great fun part of Guiding and an amzing adventure for all concerned.  Some girls who have never ventured out of Devon get the chance to experience their first flight, first time abroad, etc with their friends and of course making new friends throughout the trip.

The County INTOPS Selection is for all 14+ Guides and Senior Section members.  It is held once a year and is a sleepover at least, if not a weekend residential.  Many Divisions hold their own INTOPS events before putting candidates forward to the County level.

At the County event we then have to select 2-3 girls to go forward to the Region Selection which is normally held in October at Foxlease to represent Devon.  This is a great honour for the girls selected and a task that gets harder and harder each year due to the great calibre of girls coming through. We also as a County try to offer all INTOPS girls something following their INTOPS residential.

News from around the world - Our Cabana

Some of may have heard that from January Our Cabaña will be run by the Guias de Mexico, rather than WAGGGS, following a decision recently made by the World Board. Despite this change, Our Cabaña remains a World Centre.  All groups with bookings for 2014-15 should have received a communication with details of the future arrangements.

 Update on Our Cabaña

Since July 1957, tens of thousands of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and adult leaders have enjoyed the fun, personal development, adventure and leadership opportunities available at Our Cabaña.  Lifelong friendships have been formed across country borders, language barriers and age gaps and volunteer and community action experiences have given young women the skills and confidence to speak out on issues important to them here in Mexico and in their home countries.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is committed to ensuring these opportunities and experiences continue to be available to girls, young women and leaders from all Member Organizations.

With the global economic crisis and the perceived security concerns about travelling to Mexico negatively impacting the number of international visitors to the Centre, the World Association's World Board and the World Centres' Committee considered a number of options to guarantee the sustainability of Our Cabaña.

After extensive conversations with Guias de Mexico, the World Board recently agreed to transfer the running of Our Cabaña to Guias de Mexico, effective from 1 January 2014.

The World Association will continue to deliver some global seminars and events at Our Cabaña, such as the WAGGGS leadership development programme, Stop The Violence ACTIVATE events and other training opportunities such as on Fund Development and train the trainer events.

Global fun and friendship events such as the ever popular World Thinking Day Monarch butterfly experience will still be available to members from all MOs, delivered by Guias de Mexico.

Alongside these global events, Guias de Mexico will run activities and events for its own members and may work with other local organizations and companies to use Cabaña for their events.

Our Cabaña will still be a World Centre, open to Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and adult leaders from all around the world and part of the World Centre family of Pax Lodge, Our Chalet, Sangam and our Fifth World Centre pilot in Africa.

The staff and Centre team will spend the next few months working with Guias de Mexico to ensure a smooth transfer of operations.

We would encourage you to continue to promote this special place to your members and to help ensure that Our Cabaña remains a place of global learning, leadership development, fun and friendship.
