Why We Volunteer - Volunteering Gives Back
Discover how volunteering with Girlguiding helps adults grow, lead and thrive — while making a difference in the lives of girls across Devon.
From busy professionals to full-time parents, our volunteers come from all walks of life — but they all say the same thing: Girlguiding gives back more than you expect.

Casey’s Story: From Admin Assistant to Confident Leader
“Volunteering with Girlguiding helped me become the leader I never knew I could be.”
Casey is a Brownie Leader in Devon and works as an Office Administrator. Casey felt stuck in her career — capable, but without a way to prove her leadership skills. Volunteering gave her real experience in managing people, organising term programmes, handling budgets, and solving problems on the go. Casey has now applied for a team supervisor role at work — and this time, she had stories to tell.

Volunteering That Works for You - Help Girls Shine — While using or gaining skills for life
You don’t have to wear a uniform, run a unit or be available every week to make a difference. At Girlguiding Devon, we offer flexible volunteering to suit your lifestyle, your skills and your goals.
Whether you’ve got 30 minutes a month or 2 hours a week, there’s a role for you. You can:
- Help at events or camps
- Take on a behind-the-scenes admin or finance role
- Offer a specific skill (e.g. STEM, crafts, first aid, outdoor adventure)
- Support a local unit regularly or occasionally
- Assist with social media, comms or inclusion
- Join a short-term project team
Volunteering should fit your life — not the other way around.
Ania’s Story: The Organised Event Helper
“I don’t have time for weekly meetings — but I do have skills to offer.”
I’m Ania — I’ve got two kids, a full-time job, and a never-ending to-do list. Weekly volunteering didn’t feel realistic. But when our local unit needed help running an event, I offered to organise transport, and help run the snacks/drinks station. It was only a few hours — but I loved it.
Now I help at larger events, day trips and camps. I use my planning and logistics skills (honed from running a busy household!) and feel part of something amazing — without overcommitting.
"It’s rewarding, low-pressure and genuinely fun — and my daughters love that I’m involved."
Volunteering is for everyone - All ages and all backgrounds - All levels of time commitment.
You bring what you can — we’ll support you every step of the way.
Whether you’re:
- Juggling family life
- Building a career
- Retired with time to spare
- Looking for connection
- Or just want to give back occasionally
You can make a real difference — in your own way, on your own terms.

Maggie’s Story: Retired, Reconnected, and Making a Difference
“I may have retired from work — but I’ve definitely not retired from life!
I was a primary school teacher for over 30 years, and when I retired, I suddenly found myself with a lot of time — but not a lot of purpose. I missed the energy of young people, the joy of seeing them grow, and the feeling that I was making a difference.
A friend suggested I help out with her Brownie unit. I started small — helping with crafts and reading stories — and now I support the team each week and help with admin too. Volunteering gives me structure, connection and joy. The other leaders are brilliant, the girls make me laugh every week, and it keeps me feeling active and useful.
It’s never too late to start something new. Girlguiding gave me a second chapter — and it’s one full of fun.”
